Acne Isn’t Random: The Root Causes No One Is Talking About

There was a time where I was doing everything right.
Expensive skincare. Clean diet. Drinking water. Taking supplements.
And my skin was still breaking out.
That’s when I realized something that completely changed how I approach acne—both personally and with my clients:
Acne isn’t random. And it’s rarely just a skin issue.
It’s a signal.
Acne Is a Symptom—Not the Root Cause
We’re taught that acne is caused by:
clogged pores
bacteria
excess oil
And while that’s technically true… that’s just what’s happening on the surface.

It doesn’t answer the real question:
Why is your body creating the environment for acne in the first place?
Because your skin is often the last place imbalance shows up—but the first place you notice it.
Trust me. I dealt with acne myself TWICE, and there was a lot more that needed to be fixed than my skincare routine. Just look at this before/after
The Root Causes I See Over and Over Again
When I work with clients, acne is almost never just one thing. It’s usually a combination of internal imbalances.
Here are the biggest drivers:
1. Hormonal Imbalances (But Not How You Think)
Yes—hormones play a major role.
But it’s not just about having “high” or “low” hormones.
It’s about:
how your body is metabolizing estrogen
how sensitive you are to androgens
how stable your blood sugar is
how elevated your cortisol is
This is why acne often shows up as:
jawline or chin breakouts
flares before your period
deep, cystic acne
* It’s not random—it’s patterned.
2. Gut Health & Inflammation
Your gut and your skin are deeply connected.
If your gut is inflamed or imbalanced, it can:
increase systemic inflammation
impair nutrient absorption
disrupt hormone detox pathways
And inflammation is one of the core drivers of acne.
So if you’re dealing with:
bloating
irregular digestion
food sensitivities
…and acne at the same time, there’s usually a connection.
3. Blood Sugar Dysregulation
This one is massively overlooked.
When blood sugar is constantly spiking and crashing:
insulin increases
oil production increases
inflammation increases
hormone signaling shifts
Which creates the perfect environment for breakouts.
This is why acne can flare with:
sugar
refined carbs
skipping meals → then overeating
It’s not about being restrictive—it’s about stability.
4. Chronic Stress
Stress isn’t just mental—it’s biochemical.
When cortisol is elevated:
oil production increases
inflammation increases
hormones become dysregulated
So if your acne worsens during:
travel
poor sleep
emotional stress
That’s not a coincidence.
5. External Triggers (That Still Matter)
Even though acne is often internal, external factors can make things worse:
pore-clogging skincare or makeup
hair products touching your face
dirty pillowcases, phones, or hats
over-exfoliating or over-cleansing
It’s rarely just this—but it can absolutely contribute.
What Most People Get Wrong About Acne
Most acne advice focuses on:
stripping the skin
overusing actives
eliminating entire food groups
But acne is not a hygiene issue.
And over-treating your skin can actually:
damage your skin barrier
increase irritation
make breakouts worse
If you’re only treating the surface, you’re missing the root.
What Happens When You Address the Root
This is the part that changes everything.
One of my clients came to me after years of trying everything—doctors, nutritionists, endless testing—with no real results.
After working together, this was her experience:
“Kristina, I am beyond grateful for you! Seriously I’ve been to SO MANY doctors, nutritionists, health coaches, and appointments for literally anything you can think of and you’ve been the only person who I’ve ever had any change with. I’ve taken so many tests & had so much bloodwork done over the past 7 years or so and have never seen any results! The change in my skin, energy, & periods (which used to literally be 2 weeks or longer or not existing at all) since working with you in July has been CRAZY! The fact that I only have some scarring to clear up on my skin just makes me so happy! There were so many times that I felt like giving up & you always kept me going… I seriously can not thank you enough for everything!”
And this is exactly why I do what I do.
Because when you address:
hormones
gut health
inflammation
lifestyle
your skin follows.
The Bottom Line

Acne is not random.
It’s not just about your skincare.
And it’s not something you should have to “just deal with.”
It’s your body communicating with you.
The goal isn’t to silence the symptom—it’s to understand it.
I mean look at my skin NOW after healing everything INTERNALLY. No medications, no birth control, and no intense skincare routine.
